Deutsche Bank targets Asia crypto custody for 2027 after October 12 BaFin-MiCA nod
Deutsche Bank opens BTC, ETH, USDC, EURC and EURAU custody in Germany within weeks after an October 12 BaFin MiCA nod. Asia expansion follows in 2027.
Deutsche Bank is "weeks" away from launching institutional crypto custody in Germany and plans an Asia expansion in 2027, corporate bank co-head Podobnik told Reuters, in coverage relayed by CoinDesk. The bank received its MiCA authorization from BaFin on October 12, 2026, per the ESMA interim register entry Reuters cites.
Initial scope
The German service covers five assets at launch — the same list Deutsche Bank sketched in September:
- Bitcoin
- Ether
- USDC (Circle)
- EURC (Circle)
- EURAU (the AllUnity-issued euro stablecoin whose MiCA e-money token approval sits in the same regulator queue as USDC's EMT reclassification)
The bank manages clients' wallets and holds the private keys itself. Target clients are drawn from Deutsche Bank's Corporate Bank and Investment Bank divisions, not retail. Pricing and tier structure have not been published.
The tech stack
The CoinDesk piece confirms what The Block reported last year about the stack:
- Bitpanda supplies the client-facing custody technology through its B2B unit.
- Taurus — the Swiss custody and tokenization firm Deutsche Bank has backed since 2023 — stays on for the launch.
Deutsche Bank first applied to BaFin for a crypto custody license in 2023. The October 12 authorization is the EU-wide MiCA passport that replaces the earlier national regime for crypto-asset services.
What's new in this round
Three elements go beyond prior reporting:
- "Within weeks" German go-live. Previous reports said next year or H1 2026 without a quarter. Podobnik's framing moves the launch inside Q4 2026 — pending the final BaFin sign-off beyond the MiCA passport.
- Asia 2027. The Asia Pacific expansion is new. Podobnik did not name a first market. Singapore (MAS) and Hong Kong (SFC/HKMA) are the obvious candidates — Deutsche Bank has corporate-bank footprints in both — but neither licence track is confirmed.
- Beyond custody. Reuters' reporting flags plans for stablecoin conversion, tokenized deposits and digital bond issuance services. These align with the bank's 8% CAGR corporate bank revenue target for 2025–2028.
What to watch
- The German go-live date. The MiCA passport is in hand; what remains is a final BaFin operational sign-off. Watch Deutsche Bank's own newsroom for the on-live press release.
- First Asia market. Singapore MAS or Hong Kong SFC licence filings would be the primary indicator. Hong Kong's VASP regime and MAS's DPT framework require separate applications.
- The AllUnity angle. Deutsche Bank's custody stack supporting EURAU on day one gives the AllUnity consortium its first household-name bank distribution channel. Volume and pricing on the EURAU side would telegraph how fast institutional euro-stablecoin demand materializes.
- Tokenized deposits. Any pilot naming a specific corporate client and a specific stablecoin or deposit token would be the real signal that Deutsche Bank's digital-asset ambition goes beyond custody.
Context
The European tier-one bank list is finally shipping MiCA-authorized custody. Spain's BBVA, France's Société Générale (via SG-Forge) and Italy's Intesa Sanpaolo are at various stages of the same journey; Deutsche Bank is the first German-domiciled universal bank to clear the BaFin MiCA bar. On the US side, the OCC's custody position still rests on Interpretive Letter 1183 rather than a dedicated statutory framework; comparing the two sides a year from now will be the clearest read on which jurisdiction's rulebook made the launch cheaper.
