Mt. Gox rehabilitation trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi has pushed the deadline for distributing the exchange's remaining bitcoin and bitcoin cash to October 31, 2027, in a notice dated October 16, 2026 and approved by the Tokyo District Court. It is the fourth consecutive one-year extension of a plan originally set to conclude on October 31, 2023.

What changed

  • New deadline: October 31, 2027, Japan time, across all three remaining repayment categories (base, early lump-sum, and intermediate).
  • Prior deadline: October 31, 2026, set by a one-year extension in October 2025.
  • Reason: Kobayashi says "many rehabilitation creditors still have not received their Repayments," citing procedural issues on the creditor side (incomplete KYC, bank-account mismatches, exchange-partner frictions). "Base, early lump-sum and intermediate repayments" are "largely completed" for creditors who completed the required steps without issues.

Numbers block

  • Original 2014 loss: approximately 850,000 BTC lost to the hack; roughly 200,000 BTC later recovered in a forgotten wallet.
  • Trustee holdings today: about 34,388 BTC in trustee-labelled addresses, worth roughly $2.8 billion at current prices (source: Arkham Intelligence). Trustee holdings were about 141,686 BTC in June 2024 before the main distribution wave.
  • Creditor count: estimated at ~24,000; roughly 19,500 had received funds by October 2025, per prior trustee statements.
  • Total owed: approximately $9 billion equivalent in BTC + BCH at current prices, per Decrypt's cite.

What creditors need to know

  1. The extension applies only to creditors whose repayments have been held up by procedural issues, not to those who have already been paid. If you have received your base, early lump-sum, and intermediate payments, this notice does not change your status.
  2. Creditors with blocked distributions should expect renewed outreach from their designated exchange partner (Kraken, Bitstamp, BitGo, SBI VC Trade). The 2027 deadline is the fifth annual window the trustee has set to resolve stuck cases, not a fresh distribution event.
  3. Market expectations of a near-term distribution overhang now move out by another year. Prior rounds in 2024 drew heavy attention; current trustee balances are a small fraction of the earlier total.

Context — fourth extension, same pattern

Each annual extension has cited the same cause: a long tail of creditors whose procedures are not complete. The pattern suggests the remaining balance may continue to decline incrementally rather than through a single large release. Markus Levin of XYO described the remaining amount as "small relative to the liquidity and trading volumes in today's Bitcoin market" and the repayments as "more of a recurring headline than a real source of downside pressure." We report that view without endorsing it.

The one hard milestone to watch: if the trustee returns to the Tokyo District Court before October 31, 2027 for a fifth extension, that will be the signal that the long tail of blocked creditors is structurally hard to resolve rather than a transitional cleanup.
