Aviva and Ripple launch tokenized share class of £22B Sterling Liquidity Fund on XRPL
Aviva seeded £50M into a tokenized share class of its £22B Sterling Liquidity Fund on the XRP Ledger, with BNY Mellon custody and Komainu plus Licuido on tokenization rails.
Aviva Investors, the £285 billion asset manager owned by UK insurer Aviva, launched a tokenized share class of its Sterling Liquidity Fund on the XRP Ledger on Monday, October 26, 2026, seeded with its own £50 million (~$66.7 million) subscription. Aviva Investors CEO Mark Versey is quoted saying the firm believes "tokenized funds can increase efficiency and ultimately lead to improved client outcomes." The fund itself holds £22 billion ($29.4 billion) in AUM, is Irish-domiciled, UCITS-regulated and dates to 2002. The launch is reported by The Block and Cryptoast.
What is on-chain, what is off-chain
Aviva uses a "digital twin" model: the fund itself continues to operate off-chain under its existing UCITS wrapper, while the new share class is represented on the XRP Ledger. Investors need an eligible digital wallet to hold the tokens. Primary issuance, redemption and NAV calculation remain governed by the fund's Irish prospectus; the ledger carries the ownership record and (per Ripple's framing) enables near-instant transfers between whitelisted holders.
The counterparties on the launch:
- BNY Mellon — custodian of the fund's underlying assets.
- Komainu — digital-asset custody for the tokenized share class.
- Licuido — tokenization infrastructure.
- Ripple — infrastructure partner on the XRPL side. Aviva first partnered with Ripple in February 2026; Ripple describes Aviva as its first European investment management partner.
Aviva's USD Liquidity Fund share class launched on the XRP Ledger on July 29, 2026. The two tokenized share classes together now total over £86 million ($114.8 million) of Aviva's own money.
Why XRPL for a UCITS money market fund
Ripple's tokenization play has leaned on money market funds all year — the sterling MMF joins Franklin Templeton's sgBENJI moved onto XRPL and the earlier Aviva USD share class. The ledger's native asset issuance primitive, built-in order book and compliance-adjacent features (frozen trust lines, authorized trust lines) match the requirements of a tokenized UCITS more cleanly than a general-purpose smart-contract chain, and keep the balance-reconciliation surface smaller than a wrapped-token design on an EVM chain.
The structural trade is the usual one: Ethereum L1 and L2 ecosystems carry deeper DeFi composability and more secondary liquidity venues; XRPL carries lower settlement cost, deterministic finality and a smaller surface of audited interactions. For a treasury-adjacent liquidity vehicle intended to settle between institutions, the second set tends to win on operational grounds.
The number stack
- Fund: Aviva Investors Sterling Liquidity Fund
- Fund AUM: £22B (~$29.4B)
- Fund wrapper: UCITS, Irish-domiciled (since 2002)
- Tokenized class: Launched Oct 26, 2026 on XRP Ledger
- Aviva seed: £50M (~$66.7M)
- Prior XRPL class: Aviva USD Liquidity Fund (Jul 29, 2026)
- Aviva total: >£86M ($114.8M) across both tokenized MMF share classes
- Custody chain: BNY Mellon (underlying) + Komainu (digital)
- Tokenization: Licuido
What to watch
- Third-party subscriptions. Aviva's £50M is seed. The watchable number is how much external capital — pension funds, insurers, corporate treasurers — subscribes to the tokenized share class and over what window. Ripple's tokenization push stands or falls on that curve.
- Repo and collateral use. Tokenized MMF shares become materially more useful than their off-chain equivalents only when they function as repo collateral or as margin at CCPs or OTC counterparties. No such use has been announced for the sterling class yet.
- Interoperability with the USD share class. Aviva's two XRPL share classes may become composable (atomic FX swaps, cross-asset redemption flows) through XRPL's built-in order book. The firm has not announced any such plumbing.
- Regulator posture. The Central Bank of Ireland (which authorises the fund) and the UK FCA (where Aviva's distribution lives) have not published any new guidance specific to this launch. Any post-launch note from either regulator would be material.
Context
Aviva Investors joins BlackRock BUIDL (Ethereum), Franklin Templeton BENJI / FOBXX / sgBENJI (Stellar, now also XRPL), Fidelity OnChain, Janus Henderson JTRSY (Avalanche) and several smaller issuers in the tokenized money market space. The segment's share of total MMF AUM remains small, but public pension schemes and corporate treasurers have begun piloting allocations. For a fund of this size (£22B) to attach even a £50M on-chain class signals that institutional MMF issuers are now treating tokenized rails as part of the standard distribution map — not a research project. For the Stellar / XRPL arbitrage inside the same category, see Franklin Templeton's sgBENJI move onto XRPL earlier this week.
